2 row buttonhole

work to the position of the buttonhole

(this one is a 5 st buttonhole)

cast off the next 5 sts
work to the end of the row

next row: work to the cast off

edge of buttonhole

turn your work around so that the 

right hand needle is now in your

left hand and vice versa, use

the cable cast on method to cast on 5 sts

 

turn the work back and work to the end of the row.

 

you now have a nice neat buttonhole

Cast on in middle of row

knit to position where you need to add stitches, turn your work so that the right hand needle is in your left hand and vice versa
cast on the required number of stitches knitting, baby, clothes, free patterns
turn your work back to the correct side and continue with your pattern. knitting, baby, clothes, free patterns

Mattress stitch

lay the two pieces side by side, right side facing.

Using a darning needle threaded with yarn, pick up the purl bump closest to the edge.

Then move across to the other piece and do the same.

continue working in this way, from side to side, picking up the next purl bump.

your work will look like this

 

tighten the stitches as you work, the sewing up yarn will disappear into the work.
