2 row buttonhole
| work to the position of the buttonhole
(this one is a 5 st buttonhole) |

| cast off the next 5 sts |
 |
| work to the end of the row next row: work to the cast off
edge of buttonhole |
 |
| turn your work around so that the
right hand needle is now in your
left hand and vice versa, use
the cable cast on method to cast on 5 sts

|
turn the work back and work to the end of the row. |
 |
| you now have a nice neat buttonhole |
 |
Cast on in middle of row
| knit to position where you need to add stitches, turn your work so
that the right hand needle is in your left hand and vice versa |
 |
| cast on the required number of stitches |
 |
| turn your work back to the correct side and continue with your
pattern. |
 |
Mattress stitch
|
lay the two pieces side by side, right side
facing. |
 |
|
Using a darning needle threaded with yarn, pick up
the purl bump closest to the edge. |
 |
|
Then move across to the other piece and do the
same. |
 |
|
continue working in this way, from side to side,
picking up the next purl bump. |
 |
|
your work will look like this |

|
tighten the stitches as you work, the sewing up yarn will disappear into the
work. |
